America's Largest Selection of Captive-Bred Millipedes
We maintain one of the world's most diverse selections available through a single retailer.
Breeder Direct: Captive-bred millipede species offered by The Defiant Forest are produced exclusively through our own breeding projects.
Our inventory changes throughout the year as breeding projects mature, juveniles become available, and new species are introduced into the hobby. Because many species are produced in limited numbers, availability can change quickly, so we encourage collectors to check back often.
Whether you're purchasing your first millipede or searching for an exceptionally rare species to complete your collection, you'll find an unmatched combination of diversity, experience, and husbandry at The Defiant Forest.
Millipedes for Sale – Live Detritivores for Bioactive Vivariums
If you're searching for high-quality millipedes for sale, you've come to the right place. The Defiant Forest is home to America's largest selection of captive-bred millipedes, and we breed more species than any other U.S. retailer. Alongside our extensive captive-bred collection, we also offer responsibly sourced wild-collected species from around the world, giving hobbyists access to one of the most diverse millipede inventories available anywhere in the United States.
Millipedes are among the most valuable members of any bioactive vivarium. As natural detritivores, they consume decaying leaves, rotting hardwood, and other organic material, recycling nutrients back into the substrate while helping maintain a healthy, balanced ecosystem. Whether you're building your first enclosure or maintaining an established bioactive habitat, millipedes play an essential role in long-term substrate health.
Every millipede is professionally packed and shipped using temperature-conscious methods designed to ensure healthy arrival and minimize shipping stress.
Why Millipedes Are Important
Millipedes contribute to a thriving bioactive enclosure by:
-
Breaking down leaf litter and decaying organic matter
-
Recycling nutrients back into the substrate
-
Naturally aerating soil through burrowing
-
Supporting beneficial microorganisms
-
Helping maintain healthy soil structure and moisture retention
Unlike many invertebrates, millipedes are peaceful, hardy, and relatively low maintenance, making them excellent animals for both beginners and experienced keepers.
What Do Millipedes Eat?
Millipedes primarily feed on decomposing hardwood leaves, rotten hardwood, fungi, and naturally decaying organic matter. While they may occasionally sample fresh vegetables or supplemental foods, a properly constructed substrate should provide the majority of their nutritional needs.
A substrate rich in hardwood leaf litter and decomposed hardwood is essential for healthy growth, successful molting, and long-term breeding success.

Creating the Ideal Habitat
Healthy millipedes begin with the proper enclosure. Most species thrive in deep, moisture-retentive substrate that allows them to burrow naturally while remaining humid without becoming waterlogged.
A quality substrate should contain:
-
Decomposed hardwood
-
Hardwood leaf litter
-
Organic topsoil
-
Hardwood flake soil
-
Moisture-retaining components appropriate for the species

Build Your Clean-Up Crew Carefully
Millipedes are exceptional detritivores on their own, but they should be selected carefully when building a mixed-species bioactive enclosure.
Springtails are excellent companions.
Isopods are not.
During molting, millipedes become extremely vulnerable. Isopods have been observed feeding on freshly molted millipedes, occasionally causing severe injury or death. For that reason, we strongly recommend never housing millipedes with isopods.
If your goal is a thriving millipede enclosure, springtails provide all the cleanup assistance needed without introducing unnecessary risk.
Why Buy Millipedes from The Defiant Forest?
For over forty years we've specialized in exotic invertebrates, with millipedes becoming one of our greatest passions.
Every animal is maintained on deep hardwood-based substrate containing aged hardwood leaves and properly decomposed rotten hardwood—the same materials they naturally depend upon for nutrition, shelter, and successful molting.
Unlike retailers that simply import and resell animals, captive breeding is the foundation of our collection.
Today, The Defiant Forest breeds more species of millipedes than any other U.S. retailer, allowing us to continually expand the availability of healthy captive-bred animals while helping reduce dependence on wild collection whenever possible.
Our inventory also includes responsibly sourced wild-collected species from trusted partners around the world, helping introduce new bloodlines while making extraordinary species available that have not yet been established through captive breeding.
Learn Before You Buy
Buying healthy animals is only part of the equation. Long-term success begins with understanding proper care.
We've created one of the internet's largest growing collections of millipede care guides, species profiles, and educational articles covering enclosure setup, substrate composition, feeding, humidity, molting, breeding, and long-term husbandry.
Whether you're keeping your first giant African millipede or maintaining a breeding colony of rare tropical species, our goal is to help you succeed for years to come.
