What Do Millipedes Eat?

Millipedes feed primarily on decomposing leaves, rotten hardwood, fungi, and other decaying organic material. Their substrate is both their home and an important source of nutrition.

A suitable enclosure should provide aged hardwood leaf litter and properly decomposed hardwood. Supplemental foods should complement that foundation rather than replace it.

Creating the Ideal Millipede Habitat

Successful care starts with an enclosure suited to the species you're keeping. Provide enough substrate for burrowing, appropriate ventilation, and a moisture balance that supports the animal without leaving the enclosure waterlogged.

Useful habitat materials include:

• Properly decomposed hardwood

• Aged hardwood leaf litter

• Suitable soil and moisture-retaining substrate components

• Surface cover and hides

Choose Enclosure Companions Carefully

We recommend springtails as companions in millipede enclosures and advise against housing millipedes with isopods.

Molting millipedes are especially vulnerable. Isopods have been observed feeding on freshly molted animals, potentially causing serious injury or death. A dedicated millipede enclosure with springtails avoids introducing that risk.
