The Goliath Sumatran Yellow Leg Millipede (Harpagophoridae sp.) is a true heavyweight among giant millipedes. Collected from the rainforests of Northern Sumatra, Indonesia, this impressive species combines massive size, exceptional body mass, and brilliant yellow legs with a highly polished exoskeleton that gives it an almost lacquered appearance. Few millipedes command attention quite like these yellow-legged giants.
What immediately separates this species from many other large tropical millipedes is its sheer bulk. In our experience, mature specimens rival—and often exceed—the size of African Giant Black Millipedes (Archispirostreptus gigas). Their bodies are substantially thicker and heavier than the Giant Red Leg Tree Millipedes we have previously offered, giving them a powerful, robust appearance that is difficult to appreciate until seen in person.
Northern Sumatra contains some of the most important rainforest habitat remaining in Southeast Asia. The region is dominated by rugged volcanic mountain ranges, ancient tropical forests, high annual rainfall, and extraordinary biodiversity. These forests support countless endemic plants, insects, reptiles, and invertebrates that have evolved in relative isolation for thousands of years. Deep layers of leaf litter, fallen timber, and decomposing vegetation create ideal conditions for large detritivores such as this impressive Harpagophoridae species.
Although often referred to as a tree millipede due to its climbing tendencies, this species utilizes a variety of habitats within the forest ecosystem. Individuals may be encountered beneath rotting logs, among decaying vegetation, or climbing through low branches and moss-covered surfaces in search of food and shelter. Their willingness to explore vertical surfaces makes them a particularly interesting display species compared to many strictly terrestrial millipedes.
One of the qualities that has impressed us most is their durability. The Sumatran Goliath Yellow Leg Millipede has proven to be an exceptionally hardy captive species when provided with proper humidity and a nutritious substrate rich in decomposing hardwood materials. Their adaptability and impressive size make them suitable for both experienced keepers and hobbyists looking to move beyond smaller beginner species.
