Western Red-Back Jumping Spider, Phidippus johnsoni
Santa Susana Mountain Locality, Deep & Bright Red Coloration, the best locality in my opinion.
These have a bright & deep red abdomen, the deepest red in the jumping spider world. Females have an black central stripe on the back of their deep red abdomen, males have a solid deep red abdomen, beautiful. The chelicerae of both sexes are of a shining metallic royal blue color. The rest of the body is black. It is one of the species of jumping spiders that are mimics of mutillid wasps in the genus Dasymutilla (commonly known as "velvet ants".
We strongly recommend our Vivarium Naturals Arachno-Thrive Substrate - it's been formulated to provide your Jumping Spider with a high quality substrate that holds onto moisture and promotes the necessary humidity and absorbs the Jumping Spider waste. .
The most common husbandry mistakes with jumping spiders are insufficient lighting, not enough heat, and humidity. If your spider does not eat, try to move it to a brighter place and if necessary increase the temperature so that it is at least 78°F, but better at 82-86°F.
