Highland Ivory Ornamental Tarantula for Sale (Poecilotheria subfusca)

The Highland Ivory Ornamental Tarantula, Poecilotheria subfusca, is widely regarded as one of the most spectacular arboreal tarantulas in the hobby. Native to the cool montane forests of central Sri Lanka, this impressive Old World species combines large adult size with striking ivory markings, making it one of the most sought-after members of the ornamental tarantulas.

Unlike many tropical spiders that inhabit warm lowland rainforests, the Highland Ivory Ornamental evolved among Sri Lanka's mist-covered mountains. These forests sit thousands of feet above sea level, where nearly constant moisture, cool temperatures, and dense evergreen vegetation create a habitat unlike almost anywhere else in South Asia. Ancient hardwood trees draped in mosses, orchids, and ferns develop deep bark fissures and natural hollows that provide ideal retreats for this remarkable arboreal predator.

Adult females become large, heavy-bodied spiders with long, graceful legs designed for climbing. Their contrasting ivory, cream, charcoal, and black patterning blends surprisingly well against weathered tree bark while creating one of the most beautiful displays in the genus when viewed up close.

As with all Poecilotheria species, the Highland Ivory Ornamental is exceptionally fast and should only be kept by experienced tarantula enthusiasts. This is an Old World species with medically significant venom and should never be handled. Instead, it is best appreciated as an incredible display animal whose natural behaviors are every bit as fascinating as its appearance.

Whether quietly resting inside a cork bark retreat or emerging after dark to patrol its enclosure, Poecilotheria subfusca quickly becomes the centerpiece of any serious arboreal tarantula collection.
