Dominican Purple Tarantula (Phormictopus sp.)

Within the diverse tarantulas for sale deep inside The Defiant Forest, the Dominican Purple Tarantula (Phormictopus sp.) is a large and impressive Caribbean tarantula admired for its bold purple highlights and powerful build. Native to the Dominican Republic and surrounding Caribbean regions, this species belongs to the Phormictopus genus, a group of tarantulas known for their size, strong feeding response, and dramatic appearance.

The Dominican Purple Tarantula often develops subtle purple and violet tones across the legs and body that become especially noticeable after molting. Combined with its large adult size and energetic behavior, Phormictopus species have become highly popular among tarantula keepers who enjoy robust terrestrial tarantulas.

Because of its strong feeding response and quick movements, the Dominican Purple Tarantula is generally best suited for keepers with some experience maintaining larger tarantula species.

Species Overview

Scientific Name: Phormictopus sp.
Common Name: Dominican Purple Tarantula
Type: Terrestrial / fossorial species
Origin: Dominican Republic (Caribbean)
Adult Leg Span: 7–9 inches
Temperament: Defensive with strong feeding response
Growth Rate: Fast
Lifespan: Females 12–15+ years, males shorter

Natural History

In the wild, Phormictopus species inhabit tropical forests and scrub habitats across the Caribbean islands. These tarantulas construct burrows beneath rocks, roots, and natural debris where they remain protected during the day.

The Dominican Purple Tarantula emerges primarily at night to hunt insects and other small animals moving across the forest floor. The warm temperatures and moderate humidity of its Caribbean habitat should be replicated in captivity for optimal health.

Members of the Phormictopus genus are well known for their rapid growth and impressive adult size.

Appearance

The Dominican Purple Tarantula is admired for its large size and subtle purple coloration.

Typical characteristics include:

  • deep brown to dark body coloration

  • purple or violet highlights across the legs and carapace

  • thick legs and powerful terrestrial body structure

  • large adult size typical of Phormictopus species

After molting, the purple tones can become especially noticeable under proper lighting.

Temperament

Phormictopus species are known for having a strong feeding response and alert temperament. When disturbed, the spider may retreat quickly into its burrow or display defensive behavior.

Like other New World tarantulas, the Dominican Purple Tarantula possesses urticating hairs which it may kick as a defensive mechanism.

Because of its size and energetic behavior, this species is generally recommended for keepers with some experience maintaining tarantulas.

Enclosure Setup

The Dominican Purple Tarantula requires a terrestrial enclosure that provides substrate depth and secure hiding places.

Recommended enclosure features include:

  • several inches of substrate for burrowing

  • cork bark or natural hide

  • moderate humidity

  • good ventilation

  • a shallow water dish

Providing sufficient substrate allows Phormictopus species to construct burrows similar to those found in the wild.

Feeding

Like most tarantulas, Phormictopus species feed primarily on insects such as crickets, roaches, and other appropriately sized feeder insects.

Juveniles may be fed once or twice per week, while adult tarantulas typically feed every 7–14 days depending on size.

The Dominican Purple Tarantula is well known for its aggressive feeding response, often quickly seizing prey that enters its enclosure.

Molting and Growth

Tarantulas grow by shedding their exoskeleton through a process known as molting. Before molting, the spider may refuse food and remain hidden inside its retreat.

After molting, the tarantula should be left undisturbed while its new exoskeleton and fangs harden.

Because Phormictopus species grow relatively quickly, noticeable size increases often occur after molts.
