The Psalmopoeus cambridgei, commonly known as the Trinidad Chevron Tarantula, is a fast-growing arboreal species prized for its bold chevron abdominal patterning, long elegant legs, and impressive webbing behavior. Native to Trinidad, this New World tarantula combines striking appearance with active hunting behavior, making it a favorite among keepers looking for a visually dynamic display species.
Juveniles often display lighter tan and bronze coloration before maturing into darker olive, brown, and black tones accented by the species’ signature herringbone chevron markings. Unlike many terrestrial tarantulas that spend much of their time hidden, Psalmopoeus cambridgei frequently constructs elaborate web tunnels and elevated retreats that create an impressive enclosure display.
As an arboreal species, the Trinidad Chevron thrives in vertically oriented enclosures with cork bark tubes, climbing surfaces, and moderate humidity. This species is known for speed and agility rather than defensiveness, though quick movements can make rehousing more challenging for inexperienced keepers.
One of the defining traits of Psalmopoeus species is the absence of urticating hairs. Instead of kicking hairs like many New World tarantulas, they rely on speed and retreat behavior when threatened.
