Captive-Bred Giant Sunfire Millipede

Diplopoda sp. — Indonesia

First U.S. Captive Breeding • Hatched September 2026 • Expected Availability Summer 2027

The Captive-Bred Giant Sunfire Millipede combines rich red-orange, copper, olive, and gold coloration with an exceptionally thick, substantial body. Its glossy segments reflect light differently along its length, creating the fiery appearance behind the Sunfire name.

Our first captive-bred babies hatched in September 2026. We expect to offer them in summer 2027, once they have reached an appropriate size for sale and shipping.

The Sunfire Selective Breeding Program

Sunfire Millipedes are the result of The Defiant Forest’s selective breeding project to eliminate the black flecking found in animals imported as Ember Millipedes. From more than 200 wild-caught imports, we hand-selected individuals with no visible black markings to establish the foundation of this project.

Our breeding program includes more than 60 selected animals across 10 separate breeding tubs. This provides a substantial foundation of wild-origin stock as we work toward consistent coloration in future generations. The Sunfire name identifies this selectively bred line; it does not establish a separate species from the imported Ember animals.

Coloration and Build

The Giant Sunfire displays a striking progression of color. Red-orange and copper dominate the front of the body, transitioning toward olive, bronze, and gold farther back. Color intensity and pattern can vary between individuals and under different lighting conditions.

Its broad, heavy-bodied proportions are equally distinctive. The build resembles that of the Sulawesi Side Spotted Millipedes we breed at The Defiant Forest, giving the Sunfire a substantial appearance alongside more slender millipede species.

The Giant Sunfire’s genus and species have not been confirmed. We currently list it under the provisional hobby designation Diplopoda sp. Indonesia. Adult-size estimates range from approximately 6–9 inches, although additional measurements of mature animals are needed to establish a reliable range.

Why Choose Captive-Bred Sunfire Millipedes?

These offspring were hatched and raised at The Defiant Forest. They have grown on captive substrates with decomposing hardwood, leaf litter, and supplemental foods, without undergoing the collection, holding, and international transport experienced by imported animals.

Establishing captive populations also helps reduce the hobby’s dependence on repeated wild collection. For uncommon millipedes with unpredictable import availability, successful breeding provides a foundation for future generations of keepers and breeders.

Native Habitat

The founding stock originated in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Sulawesi lies within Wallacea, the island region between the Asian and Australian continental shelves, known for its distinctive wildlife.

For forest-floor millipedes, the essential habitat lies beneath the trees: decomposing hardwood, fallen leaves, fungi, and moisture-retaining organic material. These materials provide food, shelter, and space for burrowing.

Detailed information about the Giant Sunfire’s precise collecting locality and wild ecology remains limited. Its care should therefore be guided by observations of the animals in captivity, with particular attention to substrate quality, moisture, and successful molting.

Feeding

Decomposing hardwood and hardwood leaf litter should form the foundation of the diet. Vegetables and fruit are supplemental foods and cannot replace these essential materials.

Keep the enclosure supplied with:

  • Well-decayed hardwood, including white-rotted wood

  • Decomposing hardwood leaves

  • Nutritious millipede substrate

  • Fresh additions of suitable leaves and decayed wood as existing material is consumed

Offer small portions of squash, carrot, sweet potato, leafy greens, cucumber, or occasional fruit. A calcium source such as cuttlebone may also be provided. Remove uneaten fresh foods before they spoil.

Housing and Care

Provide a secure terrestrial enclosure with ample floor space and deep substrate for burrowing and molting. Mix decomposed hardwood and leaves throughout the substrate, then add a generous surface layer of leaf litter.

Cork bark, decaying wood, and patches of moss provide additional cover. Maintain moisture within the substrate while allowing adequate ventilation; avoid saturated soil and standing water.

The substrate is both their habitat and a major food source. A shallow layer of plain soil with vegetables placed on top does not provide an adequate long-term setup.

Springtails can serve as the enclosure’s clean-up crew. Avoid housing Sunfires with isopods, which may disturb vulnerable millipedes during molting. Keep handling limited, support the entire body, and protect them from falls.

Bred at The Defiant Forest

The Giant Sunfire project brings together selective breeding, substantial founding stock, and the patient work of raising an uncommon Indonesian millipede in captivity.

Our September 2026 hatchlings are growing now, with availability expected in summer 2027. Release timing will depend on their growth and readiness for shipping.
