The African Giant Black Millipede is among one of the largest living millipede species. Its broad, cylindrical body, clearly defined segments, and coordinated waves of walking legs make it a particularly engaging animal to observe. Large adults can reach approximately 12 inches or more, like humans, individual size varies.
At The Defiant Forest, our African Giant Black Millipedes for sale are offered as 6" to 10" wild stock. Animals are inspected, hydrated, fed, and acclimated before shipment. This listing is for wild-collected millipedes; exact ages are unknown.

From Kenya to Mozambique: The Landscape Behind the Species
The native range of Archispirostreptus gigas follows much of eastern Africa’s coastal belt, where the landscape includes tropical forest, seasonally dry woodland, and savanna. These environments experience different patterns of rainfall, but sheltered ground beneath trees provides fallen leaves, decomposing branches, and places to retreat.
That variety is an important part of this species’ natural history. African Giant Black Millipedes are not restricted to permanently wet jungle. They use protected ground-level habitats, sheltering beneath debris or burrowing into the soil. In captivity, this makes a deep, nutritious substrate and access to sheltered, moist areas more useful than simply keeping the enclosure constantly misted.

A Forest-Floor Feeder With a Substantial Appetite
African Giant Black Millipedes feed primarily on decomposing plant material. As they consume softened wood and fallen leaves, they help break larger pieces of organic debris into smaller material, contributing to nutrient recycling in their habitat.
Their enclosure should provide that same feeding opportunity. Use a deep substrate containing well-decomposed hardwood and decaying hardwood leaves, with additional leaf litter available at the surface. Replace these materials as they are consumed.
Small servings of zucchini or yellow squash can supplement the diet. Remove uneaten produce within 24 hours. Vegetables are an addition to the feeding routine; nutritious substrate remains the foundation.
If you are also exploring tropical millipedes from other regions, the Giant Porcelain Tiger Millipede provides a separate species to compare for appearance, origin, and enclosure requirements.
Housing an African Giant Black Millipede
Plan the enclosure around the animal’s eventual size. We recommend a 40-gallon enclosure for full-sized adults, with ample floor space, a secure lid, and approximately 6–10 inches of substrate, adjusted to the size of the millipede.
Maintain temperatures around 72–78°F. Keep deeper substrate moist without saturating it, and allow a slightly drier surface area so the animal can choose where to settle. Provide ventilation alongside moisture retention.
Cork bark and stable pieces of wood create sheltered resting areas. Avoid heavy decorations that could shift onto a burrowing animal. Newly arrived millipedes should have time to settle, and buried or molting individuals should remain undisturbed.
Calm Behavior, Careful Handling
This species is generally slow-moving and manageable, but its size calls for attentive handling. Support the entire body, let it walk onto your hands, and keep it close to a safe surface.
When disturbed, African Giant Black Millipedes may curl into a tight spiral or release defensive secretions. These secretions can irritate skin and eyes. Wash your hands after handling and avoid touching your face.
Multiple individuals can live together when space, food, and substrate are sufficient. Breeding is possible, but wild stock should not be purchased with an expectation of guaranteed reproduction or a known remaining lifespan.
